Basketball great Abdul-Jabbar has cancer

I don't really know much about the man expect that he was an NBA star. Either way cancer is something the everyone will go through on way or another..maybe someone close to you had it or is currently going through it. Here's and article i found on CNN.com on the subject.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one of the greatest college and professional basketball players of all time, says he has been diagnosed with a form of blood cancer.

"I have chronic myeloid leukemia," Abdul-Jabbar told CNN. He said he received the diagnosis last December.

The 62-year-old former center for the Los Angeles Lakers said aside from having to see his doctor and checking his blood levels on a regular basis, having chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) hasn't significantly affected his quality of life.

Abdul-Jabbar said he's going public now to educate people about this disease.

"I think it's possible for someone in my position to help save lives," he said.

Abdul-Jabbar is best known as the 7-foot-2 center who led the UCLA Bruins to three NCAA championships in the 1960s, then went on to win one NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1971 and five more with the Los Angeles Lakers before retiring in 1989.

He also has dabbled in acting, notably as an airline pilot in the 1980 comedy "Airplane!"

However, raising awareness about cancer has been part of his portfolio for some time now, too.

He said cancer has been prominent in his life.

"My grandfather died from colorectal cancer, my uncle died from colorectal cancer and my father almost died from colorectal cancer," Abdul-Jabbar said.

He added that he has the gene for colorectal cancer. This led him to get involved in a colorectal cancer awareness campaign in the African-American community. He's also participated in an NBA-sponsored prostate cancer awareness campaign.

But now he's a cancer patient himself. He said he first realized something was wrong when he began having hot flashes and sweats, something he admits wasn't normal, "even for someone my age."

After seeing his physician, blood work showed he had a "white blood cell count that was sky-high." The National Cancer Institute describes CML as a "slowly progressing disease in which too many white blood cells are made in the bone marrow."

Abdul-Jabbar said when he received the diagnosis of early stage CML, he wanted to know what was possible in terms of treatment.

He said his specialist told him the cancer diagnosis did not have to be a death sentence, as long as he followed a proper treatment regimen.

Abdul-Jabbar wouldn't reveal what his prognosis is, but he did say he is managing his disease and that having CML "doesn't impact my life too significantly."

In the process of researching CML, Abdul-Jabbar says he was shocked to learn that some cancer patients do not regularly take their cancer medication. This led him to approach the pharmaceutical company Novartis about launching an educational campaign.

Abdul-Jabbar said Novartis is paying him for his travel and time, but the idea for the campaign was his.

"The message is simple: You have to have the expert advice of a specialist. You have to take your medicine and get your blood analyzed," he said.

In an effort to provide more information about this type of cancer, he is launching a Facebook page -- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Patient Advocate -- supported by the pharmaceutical company, which manufactures drugs to treat this and other types of cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the average person's chance of getting CML is less than 1 in 500. The cancer society says CML is slightly more common in men than women, and it accounts for 10 percent to 15 percent of all leukemias or blood cancers.

The ACS estimates just over 5,000 people will be diagnosed with CML this year, and that 470 will die from it. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society estimates the five-year survival rate for CML of 44.4 percent.

I don't know about you guys but, it seems to me that everyone seems to be sick these days. In fact about 3 of my friends were sick last week including myself.

Flue shots :/

flu seasons is here, in case you haven't already noticed. It terrible, i cannot stand being sick and over the last two weeks or so I've had little symptoms here and there. i will admit last weekend was the worst i was all congested and my voice was all raspy and what not.

anyways let me get back to my point, i see signs in all the grocery stores about flu vaccinations, and i have to admit i don't think I've ever gotten one flu shot in my entire life.

which makes me question.. do we really need it??
i read this article on google news and it was explain the importance of the vaccination, especially in pregnant women.

"Oct. 27, 2009 -- A new survey shows only about one in four pregnant women and mothers of young children plan to get the H1N1 flu vaccine this year, despite recommendations from public health groups urging them to do so.

The CDC, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and many other public health organizations strongly recommend that pregnant women and new mothers get both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine shots to protect themselves as well as their newborns.

The survey shows 43% of pregnant women and mothers of children younger than 2 years old plan to get a seasonal flu shot this year, up from 33% surveyed last year. But only 27% plan on getting the H1N1 flu vaccine."

south beach diet.

Breast Cancer Awareness For Men And Women.

October is Breast cabcer aware month. we all know good well that women are at a great risk of getting breast cancer, espeically if they have history of breast cancer in there family.. but men are also at risk. although ther risk for men are alot less likey to happen dont completely rule it out.

Radiologist Deborah Day says.
Surgeon Daniel Dunn believes men with a breast lump should always assume it is cancerous, until proven otherwise, because men share women's breast cancer risk.

"In the United States last year, about 180,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and about 2,000 men," Dunn says.

Most of the time men's treatment is a mastectomy. That is what happened to Baker. Then he spent the next five months in chemotherapy.

"I was still in chemo, and found out men couldn't run," Baker says.

So Baker pushed to have the rules changed. To this day he is the only man running in the Alaska Run for Women, proudly wearing pink.

"I'm surprised there's no pink ribbon on this lapel," Baker says. "I wear one 100 percent of the time. The pink ribbon's associated with breast cancer, and the blue ribbon's associated with prostate cancer. I don't see any sense in mixing the two."

Baker does not consider himself in remission, "I prefer to think I'm cured, but pick anything you like."

Baker admits he is rare, "I want other people to know. Most men say nothing about it. They're embarrassed to have what essentially as I say has been essentially labeled a female disease."

That is why bear Baker continues to fight, urging men to be their own advocates. Because if he had not been his own, Baker believes he might not be here to fight for others.

"Be persistent," Baker says. "Realize it's your body and if there's a change by gosh go find out why."

Could Salmonella Bacteria Kill Tumors?

I was always told by my Mother that Salmonella is bad for you. Leaving food out can cause this. But I found this article that has a theory that salmonella bacteria kills tumors. I think that's awesome. Turning a negative into a postivie. Salmonella is regarded as a bad guy. Hardly a summer passes without reports of severe salmonella infections via raw egg dishes or chicken. But salmonella may not only harm us -- in the future, it may even help to defend us against cancer. Researchers may soon have a way to make the bacteria migrate into solid tumors in order to make it easier to destroy them. Furthermore, in laboratory mice, the bacteria independently find their way into metastases, where they can also aid clearance of the cancer. I think that's great! (= yay for salmonella. haha The phenomenon of bacteria attacking tumors has been known to scientists for a long time. However, a cancer therapy with potential pathogens has been unthinkable before now. The risk of the patient dying due to an infection was too high.
