Fatty foods may be just as addictive as heroin and cocaine: study

morning all! I'm finding it very hard to stay awake right now i keep finding myself starting to fall asleep. ahh this is not good! well anyways here's the article.

Fatty foods may be just as addictive as heroin and cocaine: study

Could that slice of chocolate cake, that juicy cheeseburger or those crispy onion rings be just as addictive as heroin or cocaine? A new study suggests that the answer is "yes."

The study, published in the Nature Neuroscience journal, found that when rats consumed a lot of high-fat, high-calorie food, it led to compulsive eating habits - similar to a drug addiction, CNN reports.

Here's how it works: Both drugs and these kinds of fatty foods send a rush to the pleasure centers in your brain. However, the rush is short-lived and is followed by a "crash." It will now take more and more of the substance to achieve the same "high," Paul J. Kenny, Ph.D., an associate professor of molecular therapeutics at the Scripps Research Institute, told CNN.

"People know intuitively that there's more to [overeating] than just will power," he told CNN. "There's a system in the brain that's been turned on or over-activated, and that's driving [overeating] at some subconscious level."

The study looked at three groups of rats - one group was fed regular food, the second was fed fatty foods for an hour a day and the third was fed fatty foods for up to 23 hours per day.

The third group began to eat compulsively and began to require more and more fatty food to get the same "high." It got so bad that the group would continue to eat - even in the face of pain.

"Their attention was solely focused on consuming food," sa id Kenny.

Fight back with folic acid!

People with high levels of folic acid experience fewer allergies, according to the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Folic acid may help regulate the immune system’s response to allergens. Eating more whole-grain breads and legumes, both great sources of the nutrient, may help you tuck away those tissues.

Make a clean sweep

Once a week, scrub down the house with hypoallergenic, fragrance-free cleaners and wash your bedsheets in hot water (130 degrees) to kill dust mites and banish pollen. Be sure to choose impenetrable mattress, pillow and comforter covers. Finally, make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter, which will trap dust and pollen. Choose one labeled “true” or “absolute” to get the job done right.

Know when to expect sneezing

Track pollen counts at Pollen.com and plan on closing your windows and turning on your air conditioner or dehumidifier to keep out allergens when numbers are skyrocketing. On windy days, or a few days following high winds, pollen count is high because pollen has been spread throughout the air, and mold spore counts can be high after a heavy rain. You may want to consider moving your jog from the park to the gym on those days.

Kick off your shoes

Your treads can track in pollen, grass, mold and other allergens, so check them at your door when you come home. You’ll also have much less dirt in the house!

Wipe down your dog

Lucky may be cute and loving, but he is also a host for allergy inducers like pollen, which you breathe right in when you pat, hug and play with him. After a walk or backyard playtime, wipe down your “best” friend with a damp towel before letting him in the house, You’ll both be healthier for it!

Work out at dusk, not dawn

Morning dampness increases mold counts in the air and early afternoon temperatures cause plants to open up and release more pollen, so the best time for hitting the park is at dusk rather than during daylight hours.

Spice things up

Wasabi and cayenne pepper can cause your nose to run, which, while annoying, serves to flush out allergens. Turmeric acts as a natural inflammatory, stifling allergy symptoms. Have an extra smidge of the green stuff with your sushi to say “bye-bye” to sinus aggravation this time of year, and be free with the cayenne pepper in chicken dishes and turmeric in curry dishes. The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon, sardines, herring, cod and mackerel also have anti-inflammatory powers. Eat up, and breathe easier, too.

Pick up a neti pot

Allergists say the small gadget, which resembles Aladdin’s lamp, is a great way to clear out pollen particles. To use it, fill it with lukewarm, lightly salted water. Tilt your head to one side and slowly pour the water into the higher nostril; breathe through your mouth as the water travels back out the opposite nostril. It may not be pretty, but neither are watery eyes and red noses! Find one at your local health food store or pharmacy, and use it over the kitchen sink or tub to prevent a mess.

Stay sneeze-free

Feel tip-top when you travel by choosing a hypoallergenic hotel room free of up to 98% of bacteria and cleared of allergens from all surfaces, fabrics and airflow. Find allergy-free accommodations at PureRoom.com.

Pucker up

Kissing for half an hour may provide relief from hay fever, a study in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research showed. Whatever the reason, grab your sweetie and give those allergies the kiss-off!

Wine may help women keep weight in check

Morning!
finally a study that caught my attention right away! so let me just say it now. I'm a big wino i loovee wine! its really my drink of choice and when i go out it beats out all other drinks. haha so yeah basically in this study they found that having a glass of wine can help you maintain your weight size and actually doesn't effect your weight in a negative way. point blank .. wine doesn't add pounds.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Light to moderate alcohol consumption, especially red wine, is not only good for a woman's heart, it's also good for her waistline, according to a study reported Monday.

Health

The study started out with nearly 20,000 trim middle-aged and older women. Over time, women who drank alcohol in moderation put on less weight and were less apt to become overweight compared to non-drinkers. This was true even after taking into account various lifestyle and dietary factors that might influence a woman's weight.

Red wine seemed best at keeping weight in check, but white wine, beer and spirits also had some benefit.

"Our study results showed that middle-aged and older women who have normal body weight initially and consume light-to-moderate amount of alcohol could maintain their drinking habits without gaining more weight compared with similar women who did not drink any alcohol," Dr. Lu Wang from the division of preventive medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, noted in an email to Reuters Health.

Many prior studies have suggested that moderate drinking -- usually defined as a drink or two a day -- can be a healthy habit, particularly with regard to heart health, while heavy drinking can harm health.

The new study, published in the latest issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, is the first to examine ties between alcohol consumption by a normal-weight individual and the risk of becoming overweight or obese.

The women were all at least 39 years old when the study began. About 38 percent said they did not drink alcohol; 33 percent said they drank less than 5 grams daily (a standard drink has about 10 grams of alcohol); 20 percent drank 5 to less than 15 grams daily; 6 percent drank 15 to less than 30 grams daily; and 3 percent downed 30 grams of alcohol or more daily (about 2 to 3 drinks per day or more).

Over an average of about 13 years, the women generally gained weight. However, the teetotalers gained the most weight, with weight gain decreasing with increasing amount of alcohol consumed.

Women who did not drink gained an average of 3.63 kilograms (8 pounds) compared with 1.55 kilograms (3.4 pounds) for those who consumed 30 grams of alcohol or more each day.

During the 13 years the initially normal-weight women were followed, 41 percent became overweight or obese. Women who drank 15 to less than 30 grams per day had the lowest risk of becoming overweight or obese, which was 30 percent less than that of non-drinkers.

Put another way, Wang said an initially trim woman who did not drink alcohol had about a 43 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese over 13 years. Her risk fell to 33 percent if she drank 15 to 30 grams of alcohol a day.

Women who drank higher amounts of alcohol were generally more physically active, weighed slightly less at the outset and were more apt to be smokers, than other women. However, the association between drinking and less weight gain and risk of becoming overweight or obese remained strong after accounting for these factors. This suggests that alcohol may independently affect body weight beyond its relationship with diet and lifestyle factors.

There are several reasons why alcohol might help women stay trim, Wang told Reuters Health. In the current study, women consuming more alcohol ate less, particularly carbohydrates -- a finding seen in other studies. Moreover, it's been shown that women tend to expend more energy after drinking alcohol -- more so than that contained in the alcohol. "Taken together, regular alcohol consumption in light-to-moderate amount may lead to a net energy loss among women," Wang said.

EYES WIDE OPEN

GOOOOD MOOORRNIING!
haha you would think buy saying good morning like that it would actually be a good morning. but the truth is.. its a typical Monday morning here. anyywwwhhoo. i don't know about you guys but lately i have been having these heavy bags under my eyes.. all the time and are slowly turning into dark circles. pshh needless to say i hate them. came upon this article but a new makeup that helps cover them up read on if your interested. ohh! and i hope all of you had a great weekend!

Stressed out? Been burning the candle at both ends? You can only have so many long days and late nights before developing dark circles under your eyes. You might even suffer from permanent discoloration, the result of poor skin tone or pigmentation.

The good news is that French makeup brand Laura Mercier has come up with a solution that means you can wave goodbye to those dark shadows. It's called the Under Eye Perfecter and the textured, easy-to-apply cream comes in two colours: orange and mauve. You finish off with Concealer and Secret Brightening Powder.

"Celebrities attending Laura Mercier events always ask me how to conceal tired-looking eyes," says the brand's global makeup artist, Michel Colombe, during a recent workshop in Bangkok.

Colombe explains that there are three easy steps to a perfect look. The first is to choose the colour that is best suited to your skin tone. "Orange works best for dark circles that look grey to greenish while mauve works on red to purple shading," says Colombe.

Once you've selected the colour, apply the cream gently around the edge of the eyes using Laura Mercier's secret camouflage brush until the skin colour looks even.

"In the old days, makeup artists used to mix lipstick colours to create a perfect shade to suit to the skin tones under the eyes, but lipstick has a lot of oil so it gives the skin an oily sheen," he says.

Step two is to hide the dark circles with Laura Mercier's Secret Concealer, a moisture-rich and vitamin-enriched product that's easy to blend and leaves the sensitive skin moist and soft. Apply with the brush then press the spot gently with a finger.

Finish off with a touch of Secret Brightening Powder applied with the secret camouflage powder brush to complete step three. The powder, which contains micronised pigments, will leave the skin looking radiant and natural. Colombe warns against using it on the whole face, though. "It's designed only for the area that needs lightening," he cautions.

With 12 years experience in the fashion industry, Colombe stresses the importance of moisturising the skin before putting on makeup. "Choose your products carefully and remember if your skin care routine does not include sufficient moisturiser, the concealer will be hard to blend and create an uneven tones on the skin."

BRUSHING UP
Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfecter costs Bt850, the Secret Concealer is Bt950 while the Secret Brightening Powder is priced at Bt1,050, available at the brand's counters in department stores
