US govt policy displays fear of bioterrorism

IN a recent article from the Associated Press, I found out that the US government is controlling America's export of bird flu vaccines to countries which it considers to be nests of terrorist activity. On this list are Iran, Cuba, Syria, and Sudan. The article also mentioned North Korea, but just today the US government removed North Kora from its terror blacklist. I have yet to find out how this policy affects North Korea now. The bird flu vaccines is just one of the many vaccines whose export is heavily watched by the US government. The worry is that other countries might use it as a biological weapon against the United States. Peter Palese, chairman of the microbiology department at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, said that the regulations bird flu vaccines made "no scientific sense", because the vaccines were mainly used on chickens, ot on humans in order to prevent the bird flu virus from mutating into a form that would in fact be harmful to humans.

I am not sure as to the full implications of this government policy, but I do agree that the US must rethink its policies in such a way that each action is not counterproductive. Often times, well intentioned regulations can lead to harmful and even catasthropic results.
